Why Freshwater Pearls?

Freshwater pearls are grown in freshwater mussels and are known for their softer, more organic shape compared to saltwater pearls. No two are identical. Electrons Libres uses natural freshwater pearls with subtle variations in colour and texture — off-white, cream, soft pink — that give each handmade piece its own character. All closures are hypoallergenic stainless steel, nickel-free and corrosion-resistant for daily wear.

Freshwater Pearl Jewellery — FAQ

What are freshwater pearls and how are they different?

Freshwater pearls are grown inside freshwater mussels, mostly in lakes and rivers. Compared to round saltwater pearls, they have a softer, more organic shape and a gentle lustre. Every freshwater pearl is unique — no two pieces in this collection share the exact same shape, colour, or texture.

Is the jewellery hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin?

Yes. All closures are made of hypoallergenic stainless steel — nickel-free, corrosion-resistant, and designed for daily wear. The pearls themselves are a natural material. This makes the pieces suitable for most people with sensitive skin or metal allergies.

How do I care for freshwater pearl jewellery?

Put your jewellery on last, after perfume and lotion, and take it off before showering or swimming. Wipe the pearls gently with a soft, dry cloth after wear. Store flat, away from other jewellery that could scratch the surface. See our jewellery care guide for full details.

Which necklace length should I choose?

Necklaces come in S (39 cm), M (42 cm), and L (45 cm). S sits high like a choker, M rests at the collarbone, and L gives a longer, layered look. For layering two pieces together, choose two different lengths.

Are these pearls suitable for a wedding?

Yes — freshwater pearls are a classic bridal choice. Brides, bridesmaids, and guests all wear pieces from this collection. For curated wedding looks by role, visit The Wedding Edit.
